Tysons Community Alliance tried it out!

Why Skateboard?

  • Portability: Skateboards are lightweight and easy to carry, making them perfect for multimodal commutes. You can easily take your skateboard on public transit or carry it into buildings.
  • Convenience: Skateboarding can be faster than walking and more flexible than biking, especially in urban environments where space is limited.
  • Cost-Effective: Skateboards require minimal maintenance and no fuel, making them an affordable transportation option.
  • The Community: One of the best parts about skateboarding is the community. People of all ages support each other, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy.

Choosing the Right Skateboard

To ensure a smooth and comfortable ride, it’s important to select the right skateboard for your needs:

  • Soft Wheels: Opt for skateboards with soft wheels if you’re navigating urban environments. These wheels are designed to absorb bumps and shocks, providing a smoother ride over cracks and uneven surfaces. This can make your commute more comfortable and less jarring.
  • Deck Size and Shape: The deck’s size and shape affect your ride. A wider deck offers better stability and is ideal for beginners or for those who prefer a more stable ride. A narrower deck is more maneuverable and suitable for experienced riders who need agility.
  • Trucks and Bearings: Ensure your skateboard’s trucks (the parts that attach the wheels to the deck) are properly adjusted for your riding style. High-quality bearings will help your wheels spin smoothly and reduce friction, making your ride more efficient.

Safety and Comfort

Skateboarding for transportation requires a focus on safety and comfort. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe ride:

  • Protective Gear: Invest in a good-quality helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards. Protective gear can prevent injuries in case of falls or accidents, making your ride safer.
  • Proper Footwear: Wear shoes with a flat soles and padding to ensure better control of the skateboard and to protect your feet from impact.
  • Check Your Board: Regularly inspect your skateboard to ensure it’s in good condition. Check the wheels, trucks, and deck for any signs of wear and tear that could affect your ride.

Navigating Tysons

Tysons offers a range of skate-friendly routes and paths. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Smooth Surfaces: Stick to well-paved roads and dedicated skate paths for a smoother ride.
  • Shared Spaces: Be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles. Always follow local regulations and respect shared spaces.

Essential Skateboarding Skills to Navigate Tysons

Proper skate stance.

Pushing and Rolling: The most basic skill in skateboarding is pushing. To start, place one foot on the skateboard while using your other foot to push off the ground. If you’ve used a scooter before, the foot positioning will be similar. If you push with your right foot and ride with your left foot forward, you’re “regular.” If you push with your left foot and ride with your right foot forward, you’re “goofy.” Once you gain enough speed, put your pushing foot back on the board and ride smoothly. Practice pushing with a steady rhythm to maintain your speed and control.

Kickturns: Kickturns are crucial for making sharp turns and navigating obstacles. To perform a kickturn, shift your weight onto your back foot while applying pressure to the tail of the skateboard. This lifts the front of the board and allows you to pivot and change direction. It’s a useful skill for maneuvering through tight spaces or avoiding obstacles.

Ollies: While not a basic trick for beginners, the ollie is a fundamental skill for advanced maneuvers. To perform an ollie, crouch down and use your back foot to pop the tail of the skateboard while dragging your front foot up towards the nose. This lifts the entire board off the ground, allowing you to jump over obstacles or gaps.

Skateboarding is not only a practical transportation choice but also a way to enjoy the outdoors and stay active. Whether you’re cruising to work, meeting friends, or exploring Tysons, your skateboard can make your journey more enjoyable and efficient. So grab your board, put on your gear, and start rolling!
