Project Background

Gateways create a sense of arrival at a place by enhancing the transition at the boundary between neighborhoods. They are the first and last impressions of a community. In fact, distinctive gateways are a hallmark of thriving communities.

The Tysons-Scotts Run Gateway, located on Dolley Madison Boulevard (VA-123) at the Dulles Area Access Road (VA-267), is our opportunity to showcase the transformation of Tysons into a vibrant urban hub, reinforcing our status and competitive edge as an economic powerhouse that attracts businesses, residents, and visitors from around the world. Specially-designed artwork will help highlight the thoughtful urban architecture balanced by carefully preserved natural areas that contribute to the unique identity of Tysons.

The TCA is leading an effort to enhance the visual identity of Tysons by incorporating custom gateway art and neighborhood branding into a bridge rehabilitation project being undertaken by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). This initiative not only adds visual appeal to this bleak location but also reinforces the identity of Tysons as a dynamic, globally-attractive urban center.

The TCA is working in collaboration with Fairfax County leaders, businesses, and the community to develop a design and identify funding for the project. Renowned infrastructure artist, Vicki Scuri, will lead the design of a cohesive, visually appealing, and meaningful gateway artwork using steel grillwork and LED lights. She has magically transformed infrastructure into art on similar projects across the country, including two bridges over Arlington Boulevard (VA 50) in Arlington, VA.
