In mid-July 2020, Tysons Partnership issued a public survey asking questions about living and working during a pandemic to understand how people in and around Tysons and the D.C. metro area feel about the very different times we are living through now. Respondents were able to answer questions from their individual point of view and from that as an employer.

We received over 700 responses to the survey, with roughly half from people living or working in and around Tysons. The basic respondent demographics appear on page 6 of this report. The survey questions addressed issues such as school reopening, working from home, returning to office-based work, shopping, dining, and transit. A single “do you have anything else you’d like to add?” open-ended question gave people the opportunity to comment broadly, giving us a qualitative sense of what is at the top of people’s minds.

With the minute-by-minute of news coverage on these topics, our findings are less about blockbuster surprises than a confirmation of the many opportunities for public and private entities to think innovatively, collaborate, and consider a wide range of human emotions as they continue evolving their responses to a stubborn public health crisis.

Our intention is to set a baseline of understanding that could be tracked through another survey in roughly six months, so we hope that readers of this report will respond again in the future, helping us and our many Tysons stakeholders to listen, learn, and take positive actions for our community.

Statement from the Tysons Partnership:

Tysons Partnership welcomes WMATA’s announcement that all four Silver Line Metro stations in Tysons will reopen on August 16. The Tysons community depends on safe and reliable rail service to meet the mobility needs of our employers, residents and workforce.

When the rail closure was first announced on April 22, Tysons Partnership convened a response task force consisting of WMATA officials, Fairfax County government leaders, local business stakeholders and community members. Our goals were to expedite the return of rail service to Tysons and mitigate the effects of the shutdown on Tysons employers, commuters and residents. We are pleased with Metro’s announcement last week that bus shuttle service at the McLean and Greensboro Metro stations will begin on June 28 and with today’s announcement of a firm end date for the shutdown.

With Phase Three reopening beginning July 1, traffic volume in Northern Virginia is projected to return to near pre-pandemic levels. With this in mind, Tysons Partnership urges Fairfax County and the Commonwealth to consider piloting dedicated bus lanes as a way to ensure safe, reliable and frequent bus shuttle service through the planned August 16 rail reopening. As previously stated by WMATA GM and CEO Paul Wiedefeld, this will allow METRO “to cycle buses more efficiently, expanding capacity that would allow passengers to maintain social distancing.”

Tysons Partnership, designated as the Implementation Entity for the Tysons 40-Year Comprehensive Plan, is proud to champion placemaking efforts within Tysons — and we have an exciting opportunity to share!

As part of an effort to support entrepreneurship and create vibrant places, Fairfax County is looking for ideas to repurpose the former Container Store at 8508 Leesburg Pike in Tysons. The site, located between the Spring Hill and Greensboro Metro Stations, is owned by the County, and Tysons Partnership will serve as a member of the Request for Interest (RFI) Steering Committee.

This project, “Activate Fairfax: 8508 Uncontained,” is a pilot of the Department of Economic Initiatives new program, Activate Fairfax, which aims to transform vacant commercial spaces into economic development destinations which boost innovation and entrepreneurship, demonstrate creative placemaking and feature the Made in Fairfax Network. Dynamic pop-up, cultural, artistic or community-oriented programming aligned with these goals will be encouraged to ensure that the space functions as a vibrant asset and experience for residents and visitors. Responses will be accepted until April 20, 2020.

Beginning August 11 through August 26, 2018, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will conduct around the clock construction on a segment of the Metrorail Orange, Blue and Silver lines resulting in limited capacity, and possible crowding and delays.

Weekday Service Highlights:

SILVER LINE: Trains will operate between Wiehle-Reston East and Largo Town Center every 20 minutes at all times.

ORANGE LINE: Trains will operate between Vienna and New Carrollton every 20 minutes at all times.

BLUE LINE: Trains will operate between Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery every 16 minutes during rush hour periods; every 12 minutes midday and evenings; every 20 minutes after 10 p.m.

YELLOW LINE: During rush hour, additional trains will operate between Franconia-Springfield and Greenbelt every 16 minutes for added capacity into D.C ., and to accommodate Blue Line customers traveling between Virginia and Downtown D.C.

NOTE: No rail or bus service between Rosslyn and Arlington Cemetery. Use the Yellow Line and transfer to/from the Orange or Silver lines at L’Enfant Plaza.

In the last two years, there have been exciting new amenities announced for Tysons, including:

  • Capital Bikeshare
  • Jones Branch Connector, a new way to get across the Beltway
  • 225-seat black box theater
  • 15-screen luxury movie house
  • Wegmans and Whole Foods

“Since 2014, the Tysons skyline has seen the addition of 13 new buildings, bringing to the market millions of square feet of mixed-use and transit-oriented development,” said Fairfax County Chairman Sharon Bulova.“Twelve more buildings and 3.9 million square feet are under construction at this very moment. It is amazing how far we’ve come since the Tysons Plan was adopted just eight years ago.”

This new development results from the ambitious plan to transform Tysons into a green, walkable urban center that will be home to 100,000 residents and 200,000 jobs by 2050. The plan provides for new local streets and bike lanes, parks, athletic fields and green spaces, affordable housing, a library, a performing arts center and more. These amenities and facilities will remake Tysons into the place where people will want to live, work and play.

“The pace of change in Tysons is astounding,” said Sol Glasner, president of Tysons Partnership. “Along with our partners in Fairfax County Government, we invite the public to attend our free open house to experience the many new additions to our community, while also previewing the assets set to arrive in the near future.”

Governor Northam announces 600 new jobs created in Tysons, VA


TYSONS, Va., April 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Virginia Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Appian, global innovator in enterprise and cloud-based low code software development platforms and business process management software, has selected Valo Park at 7950 Jones Branch Drive in Tysons, Virginia as the new location for its 200,000 square foot headquarters. Appian will serve as the anchor tenant for the newly redesigned multipurpose commercial office campus.  Appian CEO Matt Calkins along with building owner Tamares and representatives of CBRE joined the governor at an event today to make the announcement.
